The story goes that Rufus Harley watched the funeral procession of President John F. Kennedy on television in November 1963 and was transfixed by the sound of the bagpipes. He purchased a set of Great Highland bagpipes and taught himself to play — an extraordinary feat for an instrument with no established jazz tradition.
What followed was years of dedicated practice, experimentation, and the development of a completely original technique. Rufus adapted the bagpipe's drone-based tonality to jazz harmony, finding ways to phrase, swing, and improvise on an instrument that had never been used this way before.
